Disabilities Specialist

Jane Castillón is excited to be a new member of the DSP team. She is originally from San Diego and has a decade of experience helping others succeed in their personal, educational, and professional pursuits. Jane is familiar with the University of California system having graduated from UC Irvine with BAs in Spanish as well as in Psychology and Social Behavior. After working a few years as a researcher, she earned her MA in Counseling Psychology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, completed a predoctoral internship at Counseling Services at UC Santa Barbara, and is currently a Ph.D. Candidate.

Jane has an excellent understanding of biological, familial, academic, and socio-cultural factors that can influence students at this university. She welcomes the opportunity to meet with students coping with psychological disabilities and encourages them to schedule an appointment to discuss their specific needs as soon as possible. In her free time, Jane enjoys running, being adventurous in the kitchen, painting...and rooting for the Chargers.

Disabilities Specialist

David Dunlop has been a Disabilities Specialist at UCSB since December 2002. He primarily works with students with Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) and students with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI). Before coming to UCSB, he worked with the Learning Disability Program at Santa Monica College and the Office for Students with Disabilities at UCLA. His educational background includes obtaining a Ph.D. in Education from UCLA. His dissertation examined community college students with learning disabilities’ motivation and service use. His interests in the field stemmed from his own learning difficulties and desire to understand how to learn more effectively. He understands many of the concerns that students with learning disabilities and AD/HD face in post-secondary settings. He is able to discuss the procedures for obtaining services with Disabled Students Program for students with learning disabilities, AD/HD, and ABI and give an overview of the characteristics of these disabilities.
Adaptive Technology Specialist

Mark Grosch started at Disabled Students Program ten years ago and then left to work in the Geography Department for the better part of eight years. Now he’s back in his capacity as the Adaptive Technology Specialist. Chances are if you have ever learned how to use Kurzweil or other adaptive technology in our Adaptive Technology Center, you’ve already met Mark. He’s available to help you with any questions you might have regarding accessibility or adaptive technology. If you can’t find him in the office, chances are he’s busy playing with his 3 year old son, Ethan or 18 month old daughter Kristin.
Staff Interpreter

Katie Ingersoll came into the field of sign language interpreting because her sister was born deaf. She’s provided sign language interpreting for UCSB classes and events since 2001. Prior to that she worked for 15 years at Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. Katie served as ILRC’s Interpreter Coordinator and Civil Rights Advocate for People with Disabilities. Katie was a principle cast member and interpreter for Access Theatre, a professional national touring theatre company featuring original productions showcasing performers and play writes with disabilities. Katie’s BA degree is in Music from California State University, Humboldt. She came to Santa Barbara to study opera for an additional five years at the Music Academy of the West before entering an interpreter training program at CSUN and SBCC. She is currently a candidate for the new National Interpreter Certification from RID/ NAD.

Disabilities Specialist

Claudia Nicastro-Batty received her BA degree in Education from the University of Rhode Island, her Masters in Special Education from Boston University and completed the Interpreter Training Program at Northeastern University. Claudia has worked in the field of disabilities since 1978 as a teacher of the deaf , American Sign Language Instructor, Sign Language Interpreter, Disabilities Specialist and as a coordinator of special programs for learning disabled students. Claudia joined the DSP staff in 1992 as a Sign Language Interpreter and Disabilities Specialist working with students who have Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, Acquired Brain Injuries and hearing loss. She presently works with students who have Learning Disabilities, who are Deaf and hard-of- hearing. Claudia was nominated for the Margaret Getman award in 2005 for her service to students. In addition to her role as Disabilities Specialist, she is the Coordinator of Deaf Services, a mentor for Juniors, Advisor to Project Eye-to-Eye, (a mentoring program matching LD/ADD students with mentees in area schools), and Chair of the Student Affairs Student Staff Divisional Meeting Committee which recognizes students for their work in the Division of Student Affairs.

You may have seen Claudia on campus with her Border Collies. When not in the office she enjoys spending time with her human and canine family and knitting for various family members and friends.
Administrative Assistant

Christian graduated from UCSB in Spring 2008 with a B.A. in Global Studies and a minor in Spanish. He has worked with DSP throughout his undergraduate career and now works in the office full-time to provide academic accommodations and services to students. Please contact Christian if you have any general questions about registering with our program; services that we offer such as notetaking, exam accommodations, or adaptive equipment; or payroll inquiries.
Administrative Assistant

Elizabeth Ross works closely with Wanda to ensure all students receive appropriate and timely services.
StudentStaff

David currently works part-time as a front desk office assistant and conducts proctor orientation meetings, in addition to proctoring exams for students participating in the DSP Program.
Support Services Coordinator

Wanda Thomas, long time staffer in DSP (over 23 years) and UCSB employee since 1982; brings a historical expertise to the department. She is the Support Services Coordinator, serves as the Office Business Officer/Manger among other analyst responsibilities and Assistant to the Director. Wanda supervises the Administrative Staff and oversees student note takers, readers and test proctors. Being the mother of an LMU graduate who is now an Inner City High School teacher; gives her a different perspective on student college life, which not only assists students but reassures parents. Her motto is “Having a good sense of humor does wonders for staff that work 8 hours together and also creates a friendly environment for students.”
Director, Disabled Students Program

Gary White is the Director of the Disabled Students Program (DSP) at UCSB. He received his BA in Psychology from Swarthmore College and his MA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University in Santa Barbara. He is a licensed Marriage Family Therapist, and has a private practice in Santa Barbara, working with a range of populations and issues. He also teaches graduate students in Counseling Psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria. Gary has worked on campus since 1990, starting at The Women’s Center and most recently, as a Career, Personal, and Group Counselor at Counseling and Career Services. He is excited to be working at DSP.
