Consideration of a Health Condition

Students receiving this accommodation are living with a condition that is episodic and intermittent in nature. This student’s condition can be exacerbated spontaneously; as such, these episodes can interfere with exams and quizzes. If the disability is exacerbated before an exam to the point of incapacitation, students are instructed to contact both the Professor and their Disability Specialist as soon as possible to explain that they cannot make it to the test. After the episode, students are expected to contact their professors again to arrange for an alternative test date with accommodations. Once a make-up exam date is agreed upon, the students will submit a new request in the DSP online system. If there are any concerns about this type of consideration interfering with the fundamental nature of the course, please contact the student’s Disability Specialist indicated at the bottom of this letter.

Consideration of Health Condition: Additional Time on Assignments

Some students may be eligible for additional time on assignments if their disability prevents them from submitting an assignment on time. Please note that syllabi are contracts with faculty and that all requests for additional time must be approved in advance by DSP and presented to faculty for consideration. DSP cannot mandate additional time as an accommodation after a deadline has passed. The student should not be penalized for extended time required to complete assignments. A reasonable time frame for the extensions should be established in advance. It is the student's responsibility to initiate this accommodation by meeting with their specialist in advance of the request to faculty.
